Review by hotel critic
Upon arrival, the staff greeted us with warmth and offered a welcome drink, which set a nice tone for our stay. The bar/lounge area is quite cozy, with a roaring fire that adds to the overall ambiance, making it a perfect spot to unwind. Our room, though small, was comfortable and equipped with essential amenities such as an electric kettle and a flat-screen TV. The carpeted floor and clean bathroom contributed to a pleasant environment. I did find the noise from the bar below somewhat intrusive, particularly after hours. Dinner at the restaurant was a mixed bag; I appreciated the convenience of being able to dine in our private space by the fire, but the dinner's quality didn’t quite match the price. Although the beef and lamb were enjoyable, the lack of crispy potatoes on the side felt like an oversight, especially considering the £60 price tag for four roasts. While the Standard Inn has its charms and is a lovely place to stay, potential guests should weigh the offered luxury against the relatively steep prices, especially during busy periods like Easter. It’s a solid choice for those exploring beautiful Rye, but expect to manage some minor shortcomings along the way.
